What is electricity? - Electricity Explained - (1)
What is electricity? How does electricity work? What do electrons do? What is short circuiting? These are all questions answered in this video: A fundamental explainer on what electricity is and how it works.
In following videos we'll look at voltage, ampere, ohm (resistance) and many more electricity related topics. All of this is to build a foundation of knowledge to serve all the future (and past) videos here on Into The Ordinary.
A couple of choices were made during the production of this video, that can be helpful to know:
- I chose to mention the Bohr-model in relation to the orbital model to bring the point across that there is more to atoms than just this. The What Are Atoms? video better explains orbitals than this video does, though.
- I intentionally used the word "shells" instead of orbits because it better catches what electrons are in real life, although still a simplification. This video is about electricity, not particle physics.
- Power generation, how batteries work, amps, volts, ohms, are all topics I want to address in separate videos.
- There will probably be a few more questions about this video, which I will try to address in the comments or in the description, here.
Never directly connect a wire to both holes of a wall socket, and never directly connect a wire to both ends of a battery! This can be dangerous and potentially life threatening!

Advanced Whole House Fans Explained in Under Two Minutes
The QuietCool Advanced Whole House Fan System can save you money, let you enjoy better health and keep you cool for pennies an hour. QuietCool cools and ventilates your home with fresh, natural air and can save you up to 50 to 90% off your air conditioning usage. Picture your home as a giant oven, baking in the hot summer sun all day long and trapping that heat in. If your AC wasn't on during the day, when you come home, you'll find your home heated up like a giant oven and just like when you shut off your oven, when the sun goes down, it takes a while for that heat to go away. So, what do you do? You flip on your AC. While the AC can cool your home, what about your attic? Your attic can reach temperatures of 150 degrees or more and your air conditioner does nothing to cool down the attic. In fact, your air conditoner is in a constant battle with your attic. Every time it cools the air in your home enough to shut off, the attic heats it right back up again, causing your air conditoner to cycle off and on. Now what about a home that has QuietCool? Picture a giant vacuum cleaner connected to all the attic vents of your home. Crack a few windows and turn on that vacuum cleaner. This process is how QuietCool works. Just like a giant vacuum cleaner, QuietCool will suck all the hot, stale air out of your home and attic in as little as three to four minutes, while bringing in a fresh, natural breeze through the home. With QuietCool, having a cooler home in the hot temperature of the summer is possible.
